Imagining Safety: Race, Policing, and Incarceration

What does safety look like when viewed through the lens of faith? Join us for a discussion challenging us to redefine safety through the lens of our theologies and faith. We will analyze our current, violence-driven system of policing and incarceration to pose the question: is this system delivering on its promise of safety, or is it perpetuating violence and harm? What might a system rooted in liberation and dignity look like?  As people of faith, we believe that all people have inherent worth and dignity. For this reason, we care deeply about harm and violence, and we seek responses to harm that do not create more violence. Our faith values prioritize restoration and repair rather than punishment. We recognize that as humans we are complex; no one is innocent or guilty, rather all of us have done harm and been harmed by others. We also recognize that -- as creations of the Most High -- none of us are “monsters,” disposable, illegal, unreachable, or irredeemable. During Imagining Safety: Race, Policing, and Incarceration, we will unpack the history of these systems and their origins in slavery and white supremacy, and begin to imagine a public safety system rooted in the dignity of all people, the needs of survivors and community members, and the reality that most harm results from oppressive political, economic, and social conditions. We will also discuss practical steps we will take to move towards the dream of full liberation for all people. Call-in information will be shared upon registration.

Outvote Training

Equip yourselves with tools to magnify your impact! Outvote is a peer-to-peer texting app that helps Faith in Texas teams make calls to action that anyone can take to make a difference. Faith in Texas Mobilization Teams use the Outvote system to magnify their impact by allowing members to quickly and efficiently text their friends, congregation members, and community members about upcoming education, action, and training opportunities. Outvote is the main tool we use to do turnout, track our progress, split up lists among our teams, and mobilize our base. Call-in information will be shared upon registration.

And now more than ever, we're using our skills and expertise to move the work forward in communities everywhere. 2020 has been a year defined by crisis. Both the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing racially motivated terrorization and killings of Black people have further exposed and exacerbated the crisis we have lived with for generations. These crises have revealed the need for democracy to deepen its commitment to the value of "we the people...for the people." We recognize that communities are longing for candidates that communicate with them where they are. We can make that happen by bringing candidates to our organizations and neighborhoods to answer the questions that matter to our communities. The Virtual Candidate Forum Training Series is a three-part series that will be offered in late August and will cover the elements of a great forum, taking advantage of virtual environments, moderation, candidate recruitment, 501c3 compliance, and more. State of Our Faith: Theology, Liberation, Police, and Prisons

How does your personal faith align with the current struggle against white supremacy and racism? Rev. George Mason and Rabbi Nancy Kasten will be joined by Rabbi Elana Zelony, Rev. Ray Jordan, and Rev. Kamilah Hall Sharp to discuss how their diverse faith traditions speak to our need for liberation, and how their theologies are helping them understand the current movement to reimagine public safety. They’ll also take the time to answer your questions! Don’t miss this important conversation.

Mobilize for Liberation

Do you want to build people power to create real, community-rooted change? Join us for Mobilization Training! This training is for individuals who want to join or form a Mobilization Team that can build power to liberate our community from white supremacy, as expressed through policing, mass incarceration, violence, and a lack of critical resources like housing and dignified employment. Mobilization Teams look for where the desire for liberation is pent up, and unleash it by activating people into the ongoing struggle for justice through political education, voting, and actions. In other words, Mobilization Teams build and unleash people power! At the training, you will learn: How to create and fuel escalating actions that build power and community leadership How to promote and turn out people from your community to actions How to use organizing tools to build a consistent base of people who take action with you Once you complete Mobilization Training, you will be eligible to join a Mobilization Team with Faith in Texas. Call-in information will be shared upon registration.

Road to Liberation Campaign Launch

On August 30, Faith in Texas will launch our Road to Liberation Campaign to divest from white supremacy and invest in true liberation. We will share our faith-rooted analysis of how policing and mass incarceration have been rooted in the age-old lie that some people are worth less than others - the same lie that has accommodated slavery and jim crow - and how we can free ourselves from its grasp. We’ll offer breakout sessions to explore how white supremacy shows up in our lives and communities, and how we can take action to disrupt and dismantle it. Finally, we will take action together to let our community and our leaders know that we will no longer submit to the chains of white supremacy and racist systems. Join us for this galvanizing event as we set off on the Road to Liberation together.

Early Voting

Early voting runs from Tuesday, October 13 to Friday, October 30, 2020. Polls are open from 7AM-7PM Monday-Saturday and 1-6PM on Sundays. Registered, eligible voters can vote at ANY polling location in their county of residence during early voting. In our current social climate, Dallas County is expected to have a general election like we have never seen before. 20% more voters than in 2016 2x longer ballot, ranging from 28-66 pages long No straight ticket voting for the first time, meaning every voter takes longer More new and infrequent voters New, unfamiliar voting machines COVID-19 Safety and Social Distancing requirements These factors could create unprecedented lines and difficulties for Dallas County voters if we aren't prepared. Research candidates, find a polling location, and make your voting plan at fitx.link/ballotready.
